Puppets and Literacy

When puppets and stories come together, it can be magical. The puppeteer quickly fades into the background while the puppets become the center of attention. Storytelling with puppets adds a silly twist to retelling stories and can help children develop language and literacy skills.

Learning to retell stories with puppets helps to can build comprehension skills, develop vocabulary, practice communication skills and brings imaginations to life. The best approach to puppetry is to be fearless. Be willing to try anything. The art of puppetry is wonderfully flexible and will give you a fresh and fun learning environment.

At my school children in grade six wrote a puppet play on kindness to share with the Kindergarten class; it’s simple and yet fun for both groups. Try it with your family and watch how fun it can be.
